In a life which can be so hard to handle sometimes
I am seeking courage more than hope.
Yes, hope is a beautiful guest
whenever she chooses to linger with us.
She makes the day seem brighter
and promises us that the future will
grant us all of our greatest wishes;
But, remember, she is fickle too -
like a fair weather friend.
She will come one day
and then - just as quickly,
she will be gone again.
And if you look at the blossom of spring
or the flowers of summer
or the transitory nature of so many of our dreams . . .
then maybe you'll understand what I mean.
Whereas, when we come to Courage instead
the story is entirely different.
No, perhaps Courage doesn't look quite as as pretty as Hope
but - without a doubt - when we cultivate it intentionally
it is so much longer lasting.
Thus, if hope is the blossom - then courage is the tree
If hope is a flower - courage is the earth itself
And if hope is a dream . . .
then courage is the conviction that - if we must - we will still remain unchanged, even in the midst of our very worst nightmares .
Do you see the difference?
